“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” ESV
So many times within our lives as Christians, we can get way too caught up into what is called the “horizontal:” - all those things around us; People, family, work, school, bills, sports, etc… Not that any of these things are inherently bad, but we can get so caught up in looking side to side, that we then forget that our focus is not to be side to side - but straight up!
That as we look to the Lord in all things, the side to side things will be taken care of. Jesus said it this way, "Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you..." The bummer - and even the stark reality of this sin is that we start placing the day-to-day things and people around us above the Lord - we place our wants, our needs, our thoughts - all above His... This is called idolatry. Instead of looking to Him to work in and through our lives for His good pleasure, we go through our day just trying to make it through… Just trying to hold on… Yet, if instead, we seek the “glory” of the Lord in all that we do, say, listen to and think - it is then that we will start to see the moving of the Lord mightily within our every day lives - and the joy of the Lord will truly be our strength!
It is so easy for us to not even realize that the Holy and Divine Presence of the Lord, His glory, is absent from our lives, our families, and even our churches… O that our hearts would retune and begin to look up continually, seeking to love, worship and draw near to our Lord Jesus Christ - and in that, seeking His glorious presence in all that we participate in here on this earth within our lives - He will then use us, or I should say, He can then use us - for His glory in other people's lives around us. “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory…!”
"Lord, we seek to give you glory in our marriage, in our home, in our family, in our work place, in our school - in the very depths of ourselves Lord - our thoughts, our fears, our failures, our triumphs, our words, our actions - all that we are for You and Your glory alone... Father, wherever we go, whatever we do and in whatever we say and think - Lord, be glorified… May Your divine Presence, the Holy Spirit, be made more and more manifest in our lives - pouring forth continually fresh fillings of You! Lord, we choose to stop living for ourselves each day, and to start living for and seeking your glory in every area of our lives… Amen."
Rev 1:5-6 To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.! ESV
